Last year, I put together a list of 10 top blogs of 2008 based loosely on rankings from sites like Technorati to give readers a place to find information about topics they enjoy on lively and active blogs. You can follow the previous link to view that list. With 2009 coming to a close, I thought it was time to put together a similar list for 2009.
As I started to review the rankings of popular blogs, I found two trends. First, the number of political blogs rising to the top in overall blog rankings was much higher in 2009 than 2008. Second, the number of blogs related to financial topics rising to the top in overall blog rankings was much higher in 2009 than 2008. Clearly, the recession in the United States and weakened economies across the globe are having an impact not just in spending but also in terms of the type of news and information people are tuning into, not only through traditional media, but also through new media like blogs. It's an exciting time to be a blogger or a blog reader!
You can follow the link to see the list of 10 top blogs of 2009, which includes links to popular blogs about politics, news, business, technology, entertainment, sports, and more!

Wordpress 2.9 is here, and the changes are sure to make every Wordpress blogger happy! Sure there are lots of behind the scenes enhancements to increase functionality, security, and stability, but the updates that are going to knock your socks off are: one that will make it quicker and easier to add and edit images within your blog posts and one that will make it easier than ever to embed videos from sites like YouTube and DailyMotion within your blog posts.
With Wordpress 2.9, you can upload images and insert them into your blog posts as you write your post, and then you can edit their size, orientation, and more without ever leaving your blog post editor! You can also embed videos from popular video sharing sites like YouTube by simply copying and pasting the URL for the video into the blog post editor. When you publish your blog post, the video automatically embeds!
These are time savers that bloggers are going to love! The new Wordpress 2.9 also introduces a Trash feature where your deleted items are stored until you permanently delete them (a lifesaver for anyone who has accidentally deleted a post in the past), and a new batch plug-in update feature is another great time-saver because it allows you to check multiple plug-ins for updates and then update them at the same time with a few simple clicks of the mouse.
You can read all about Wordpress 2.9 and see a video overview of the latest enhancements to Wordpress on the Wordpress blog. If you use Wordpress.com, updates will be done automatically for you. If you use Wordpress.org, you'll need to upgrade your Wordpress installation to Wordpress 2.9 manually, but remember, if you're already using Wordpress 2.7 or higher, upgrading can be done directly through your Wordpress dashboard.
